Temperature Grounding

What this is

Temperature grounding uses cold or warmth to interrupt intense anxiety or dissociation by giving your nervous system a strong, clear physical signal.

This works because temperature is hard for the brain to ignore.

When it helps

  • Panic surges

  • Dissociation or numbness

  • Feeling “floaty” or unreal

  • Overwhelming anxiety

The technique

You introduce a safe temperature change to anchor your body in the present moment.

Try this

Choose one:

  1. Hold a cold drink or ice pack

  2. Splash cool water on your face

  3. Run warm water over your hands

  4. Wrap yourself in a blanket or hoodie

Focus on the sensation for 10–30 seconds.

Important note

Strong cold can be activating for some people — mild is enough.
If temperature grounding doesn’t help, body-based grounding may work better.
