Temperature Grounding
What this is
Temperature grounding uses cold or warmth to interrupt intense anxiety or dissociation by giving your nervous system a strong, clear physical signal.
This works because temperature is hard for the brain to ignore.
When it helps
-
Panic surges
-
Dissociation or numbness
-
Feeling “floaty” or unreal
-
Overwhelming anxiety
The technique
You introduce a safe temperature change to anchor your body in the present moment.
Try this
Choose one:
-
Hold a cold drink or ice pack
-
Splash cool water on your face
-
Run warm water over your hands
-
Wrap yourself in a blanket or hoodie
Focus on the sensation for 10–30 seconds.
Important note
Strong cold can be activating for some people — mild is enough.
If temperature grounding doesn’t help, body-based grounding may work better.
